Okay, so not a soccer specific story but if we want to manufacture a soccer storyline we can talk about Beckham attending the game or Kobe Bryant's adoration of Messi.
Soccer aside, shout out to the U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball Team for winning Olympic Gold early this morning and a ending their eight year Olympic draught.
For a minute there in the third quarter, the summer of Spain looked like it just might continue. There's no denying that the Spaniards have dominate the world sport scene in 2008. Winning the European soccer championship, the Tour de France, Nadal finally beating Federer at Wimbledon, and even the Olympic cycling road race to open the games were just part of their incredible run. But the "Redeem Team" as they've been labeled were not to be denied.
Though they started off and playeed most the game in foul trouble and showed little of the suffocating defense they had shown throughout the tournament the U.S. by way of tremendous performances by Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade
beat the Spaniards 118:107 to win Olympic gold.
Congrats to this group of multi-millionares who for the first time in a decade played as if they finally realized that the three letters on the front of their jersey were more important than those on the back. U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!!!
Champione, champione, ole, ole, ole. Champione, champione, USA, USA, USA! If only we were singing the same tune for the USMNT...perhaps if they would bring their best players (thanks again Ruud/Lalas) the way Argentina did. Perhaps if both coach and players played with their heads and to their ability. Hey, we can all Olympic dream - right?
On and ending note...seriously, are Spain's Gasol brothers sporting the worst beards you've ever seen?
